An Urgent Message to Our Patrons - August 2020 Update
Dear Stars Patron,
I want to take this opportunity to update everyone about our artistic and financial plans for Bakersfield Music Theatre. Funding a non-profit organization is always difficult as ticket sales only cover a portion of our expenses. Before COVID-19, we were experiencing our best financial health in some time. However, we are now in a position in which we need everyone's help. Stopping our productions for 4 months has left us in need of donations to meet our operational cost. The staff was cut dramatically, and those remaining did extensive remodeling and reorganization of our theatre. We have now temporarily suspended operations at the theatre and have only our manager on staff. Still, we have additional expenses such as utilities and insurance, which will use our remaining funds quickly.
Bakersfield Music Theatre has been operating for over 50 years, and I feel confident this setback will not be our demise. Please join me in ensuring our existence. I look forward to the day we can all see each other again, together at our beautiful facility.
We have been trying to keep people abreast of our efforts on our website, but a statement from our organization is probably overdue. Mandates from our Governor concerning our operation as a theatre and restaurant have changed our schedule many times. It was hoped that the majority of our season would be intact when the first fourteen-day closure was enacted in March. Now, four months later, there is still no timetable for when we may start doing live shows again.
For 6 weeks we had dinner at Stars Theatre Restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights. Those that attended had a chance to enjoy good food and drink with their friends in a safe environment. I am a firm believer that there is no entertainment as enjoyable as a live production, but in this time of COVID-19 we must produce a safe environment for the production and viewing of our shows. We have produced several shows which are available for streaming on your phone or computer. These productions were produced by our local staff with our same local talent, and the actors learned and recorded their parts individually and safely. Disenchanted, with a cast of eight talented women; Dear Elizabeth, which is a production from our Playhouse; and our children's show for our virtual BMT Summer Workshop The Big One-Oh! are all available for streaming. We hope to bring these recorded performances to the big screen at Stars Theatre Restaurant with dinner as soon as we are allowed to open. Click here to view these shows anytime, anywhere.
We have not made a decision concerning the cancellation of the rest of the 2020-2021 season. Season ticket holders will receive a credit for all of the shows we cancel this year. We have contacted our rights houses and they assure us we will be able to do the shows we have planned at a later date. It may be that next season will be mostly the shows we planned to do this year. We ask for your patience and please check our website often for the latest information concerning our operations.

As of now, all productions have been suspended and will be rescheduled once it is deemed safe by state and local government.
March 16, 2020
As the situation surrounding COVID-19 continues to unfold, both Stars Theatre Restaurant and Stars Playhouse have decided to suspend all events effective now until a time frame is determined by government officials and the CDC.
This is a decision that is not made lightly, one that fully weighs the interests and safety of our patrons and performers as we navigate this difficult time. We ask our patrons to be patient and understanding through this process as we deal with our artists and other issues.
The BMT/Stars Board of Directors and staff will be closely monitoring the situation over the upcoming weeks, keeping up-to-date with public health guidelines and recommendations. We will provide information to all subscribers, patrons, and volunteers about future performances. When given clearance, we will update our performance schedule.
If you have purchased tickets to Annie Get Your Gun or Middletown, BMT/Stars staff will contact you by phone and email within the next 72 hours to discuss your options. If you have tickets for either cancelled show, please do not call the box office or theatre at this time – we will have our full staff contacting patrons over the next few days to answer questions and facilitate requests.
When contacted, you will have a few options for how to move forward:
- Donate your ticket and receive a tax-deductible receipt for the total ticket value. Your ticket donation would help BMT/Stars mitigate a portion of the financial stress this necessary closure will cause the organization.
- Receive a complimentary ticket voucher for a future production at Stars Theatre Restaurant and/or Stars Playhouse.
Dancing at the Stars will be postponed. Dates TBA. The box office will be in contact with existing ticket holders.
Thank you in advance for your continued patience and support as we begin to assist in processing your request. We will continue to keep in close contact with State, County, and City Public Health officials as updates come in, and inform you as needed.
BMT/Stars is a nonprofit community theatre focused on producing quality entertainment and theatre education in Kern County. We strive to provide an educational resource, gathering place and home for performing artists of all ages and backgrounds that reside in Kern County.
Thank you for your ongoing support in these uncertain times.
